This is the results of the woodturning contest at the GJAF. We had quite a few submittals this year. Don Penny organized the event as he has in the past. Our judges this year were Jack Roberts, President of the WAC club in Gainesville and Bob Hunt, past President of the NEFWTA. Congratulations to all the winners!

Jon is a friend of Rita’s and from Winter Park Florida. He is a member of the Central Florida Woodturners. She cornered him at the Florida Woodturners Symposium this year and asked if he would demo his “Squashed bowl” technique to our club. He agreed and here it is. He as some helpful tips on paper glue joints as well as how to determine what size and shape you want to get. The possibilities are endless. Loosely based on. Jack Roberts is our Club President and is an accomplished turner, teacher and demonstrator. This month Jack demonstrated how to make a jewelry style box. Boxes are a fun project and can range from the simple to the sublime. There are a few tip and techniques you have to remember, most skill level turner should be able to make one. At our monthly meeting Don Geiger demonstrates how to make a Tri-Tip Bowl on the lathe. It is an interesting demo that will get you to where you will be able to turn one on the lathe. However, if that is all that you are looking for you have missed out. The journey which Don takes us down enriches you turning skills much more that just making a bowl. I never watcha a Geiger demo that I don't learn something. Don sells most of the tooling he uses in this demonstration. Woodturners of Alachua County Monthly Meeting: March of 2024 Don Geiger "Tri-Tip -Bowls"
Tracey Lee is a woodturner who has been turning for just a few years. She has gotten into texturing with the NSK and other power carving tools. In order to get depth on her pieces she uses a technique she learned from Jacques Vesery whom she meet in France at a symposium. It is called Dry Brushing. You start out with black gesso on your textured piece and by adding light layers of acrylic paint you gradually change the colors. Blue then yellow then white then silver highlights. But of course there is a technique to this which she demonstrates. Jack Roberts gave us an overview of wooden threading. He shows us some mechanical system some members have but concentrated on manually threading using the Sorby system. His analogy to NASCAR is interesting. Rita steps up to be is student.
